Ultramania in the Sierra

The high point: approaching 8700-foot Emigrant Pass

It's the oldest 100-mile trail run in the world, and probably the hardest. Racers run through snow drifts and under sweltering sun, cross icy streams and weave through boulders, climb 18,000 feet and descend 23,000. It's the Super Bowl, the Wimbledon, the World Series of ultraracing, and those who complete it have truly run the endurance gauntlet.
